Abstract: Nowadays, designers have to counteract the ability to deal with environmentally conscious
techniques to enhance building ventilation. The solar chimney can be one of the alternatives to
increase the thermal and ventilation performance of the indoor environment by using
convection of air heated by passive solar energy. In this paper, a mathematical model of a
solar chimney was developed to determine the optimum design solutions that achieves the
standard ventilation rate. This model is capable of scrutinizing wide range of geometry
parameters of the solar chimney under real weather data of Alexandria, Egypt during the
summer season. The analytical results showed that an optimum volume air flow of 0.019 to
0.033 m3/s was achieved by 88.2 % during the daytime when the dimensions of a proposed
solar chimney are 45° inclination angle, 1.4 m length, 0.6 m width and 0.10 m air gab.
Comparisons of the model predictions with bibliographic experimental work outline the
usefulness of the model.
