Abstract: This paper attempts to shed some light on the works of Professor Dionisius Agius in studying Arabic material cultural terminology. Although these works deal with one subject, Agius did not apply the same methodology and theoretical framework. In some studies, he focused on Lexica, and in some others focused on culture and history. The sources of the investigated terms in his studies can be divided into two categories: first is archival sources, and he applied that in studying textiles and food terminology, where he relied on four literary works. He also applied that in studying classical maritime terminology, where he relied on several historical and literary works. The second source of terms is ethnographical fieldwork, and Agius applied that in his investigation of modern maritime terminology in the Gulf and Red Sea. At the beginning, the paper also gives a brief idea about the field of Material Culture, the conception of this collocation and how this field started under the umbrella of sociological and anthropological studies. Later some linguists showed their interesting in investigating material cultural terminology, and that is why this field classified as interdisciplinary today. The aim of the paper is to acknowledge the efforts of western scholars especially Professor Agius in studying Arabic material culture terminology. Furthermore, it aims to illustrates the dilemmas that faced them in studying such terms in Arabic, such as the lack of appropriate resources. These dilemmas were not clear enough for early scholars and that is why they concerned their studies with collecting and classifying these terms. However, these issues were clear enough for Agius and that led him to tackle his own methodology and theoretical framework.
